Peer Pressure Video

After creating my video I found it very easy compared to the previous ones I have made. My video was on peer pressure. I believe this is an important thing first year students face not only in school and on campus but outside as well. Students need to realize the effect of giving in to peer pressure. It can result in many things, although peer pressure can be seen as a positive or negative. Most of the time it is a negative effect. I hope my video will help future first year students and regular students in general. Some people do not know how to stand up for themselves in certain situations, there are people and places you can go on campus to help you. Saying no might seem like an easy thing to do but in reality it might not be to some people. This will benefit students who have a hard time with this common problem and give them critical information as well

(**please check your email my video will not post on here for some reason)

Creativity in a Different Perspective

After reading Twyla Tharps book The Creative Habit and going over readings/discussions in class I really enjoyed how well she explained her "habits". Her readings were very interesting and allowed me to think more outside the box. Twyla made it very clear how each individual can be creative in their own way. The chapter about creative DNA made me realize how each of us are born with creativity and how each individual expresses it in a unique way. " I believe that we all have strands of creative code hard-wired into our imaginations. These strands are solidly imprinted in us as the genetic code that determines our height and eye color, except they govern our creative impulses."pg.34 This quote stood out to me when reading because growing up most people do not often realize that creativity started as a child. When you are simply given a piece of paper and begin to scribble certain things that create something your imagination is being very creative. Some people tend to lose this creativeness because we are so used to following a set of "rules" in life that we do not use autonomy. It is important to be independent and have confidence in all that you do.

Twyla proves that her biggest successes comes from her biggest failures. I agree with this because you need failure in order to push yourself and do something outside of your comfort zone. Failure is often a lesson learned. If you dwell on your past it will be difficult to strive for your goals. If most people take control over their actions and create their own guidelines rather than being a follower it will not be as easy to stand out. That is why it is so important to be creative in life. It takes autonomy and agency to be creative. Autonomy is your control and agency is actually taking the initiative to do things you desire. The creative part is what you make of in the end, all your ideas and how you express them. You can teach creativity to a certain extent. For example, when an art teacher shows you how to draw something you can try as hard as you can but it will not look exactly like your teachers drawing. In the end this shows your creativity, and how everyone is different. It is important to never lose your creativity and to always broaden your imagination.

How well do you know about your library?

After attending class to learn about research in the library I have learned many things that I was unaware about. Since I was never really familiar with using the online library page I found it very helpful to me. I am now able to look up books and locate them in the library. Seeing as how the library is much larger than ones that I am familiar with from back home I was not used to locating certain books. I needed to search a book on Autonomy called "The Autonomy Myth"-A Theory of Dependency. The Librarian Wendy Hardenberg taught me how to locate the call number and then search for the proper location. It was a lot easier than I thought it would be. This will apply to me in the future as a first year student because I will eventually need to do research papers or look for certain books to help me on assignments. Now that I have experienced how to properly look up books and the different ways to benefit me. I am sure that I will not have any trouble in the near future.

Fun on Campus

On Friday Southern offered to take a bus to see Twilight and then go shopping at the Milford mall. I enjoyed my experience because it was the first time I participated in doing something outside of campus yet still with the Southern community. I loved the new Twilight movie my favorite scene was when Edward can finally see into Bella's mind. This one was more like a love scene; the ending (I wont spoil it) had a twist to it. I encourage many people who are fans of Twilight to see it soon you will definitely enjoy it. I then went shopping, seeing as how the malls that are close to my hometown are not that big I visited many stores and bought lots of clothes. I look forward to doing something like this again in my near future. It was a great time and I ended up meeting new people. You never know how new experiences can go, this is one I did not regret.

8. Trust Your Muscle Memory

While doing this exercise it reminded me of my yoga classes that I used to take. Muscle memory has to do with repetition of physical movements. The exercise asked me to take a set of ten moves and repeat them for a couple days. After, doing this I noticed that it almost became a routine for me. I did not think that my body would ever learn something so quickly. Since I repeated the moves for a couple days my muscle memory taught me to remember the certain stances of the exercises. Just like the routines I used to do in yoga. Although, that was for a longer period of time and contained other complicated moves it still related to how my muscle memory works. Many people do not realize how important muscle memory is the power of it allows you to do certain things without even having to think about it. Your muscles are smarter than you think. As long as you trust your memory this routine will act as a memory aid for your mind. It will also allow you to be more creative, the more and more you do it your memory will increase on how well you remember the moves. This exercise was very interesting and felt like a stress reliever. Sometimes relaxing your body and working your memory is all you need to stay focused. It was a great way to figure out how well your muscle memory really is.

Facing our Fears

We all have fears that keep us from doing what we really want. No matter how hard you try and do something the fear tends to stick with you. After reviewing Twyla Tharps exercise on Fear I have come to the conclusion that I have a fear of not being successful. Now that I am in college I take things more seriously. I focus on my grades more and make time to study as much as I can. In high school this was not something I was really concerned about as long as I did the work and was on my teachers good side I would get a good grade. So much has changed through out my first year of college that having this mindset does not work nearly as well as it did in High school. Having the fear of failing at something or thinking you are in capable of doing something leads to not being successful. This fear is a negative and positive fear for me. I believe that having this fear helps me motivate myself to keep up with my school work where at the same time it can be stressful during certain situations. But, as long as I stay on task and make the right decisions I am pretty confident that I will be successful in life.

Another fear that is big in my life is the fear of losing someone you love. I am only 18 years old and I know a ton of people have lost closed relatives or friends in their life. It is one of the hardest situations that I have ever seen anyone go through. I have lost close family members in the past but, I can never experience losing a close friend or sibling of mine. Having this fear always reminds me to make the right decisions and to think twice before saying something I do not mean. Before saying goodbye to someone I love I always give them a hug or kiss. Simply because you never know what could happen or  people tend to not appreciate what they have till it is gone.

I plan on facing these fears by continuing to do what I have been. I will continue to make my family proud by getting good grades and not slacking off I also plan on showing my appreciation towards my loved ones more. Although, these fears can keep me from doing something that my friends want me to do I always know deep down that they were the right decisions in the end.

UNH vs. Southern

On October 27th the University of New Haven Chargers took on the Southern Connecticut Owls. This game is usually big every year because they are rivalries. With a score of 48-9 you can tell it was a very tough loss for the Owls. Thankfully, I have friends who play for UNH so I ended up staying the whole game to see them defeat my school, and I did not have a particular side that I wanted to win. It was also the UNH homecoming so there were many different acts during halftime. Two of my favorites were the band and the dance team, they did a very good job at staying together and on point during the routine. Attending sports events are a great way to support your school and have fun with your friends. One of my friends that went with me has never been to a college football game so she enjoyed her time that day. Unfortunately, it is towards the end of the season for the owls so I do not think I will be able to attend another football game this year due to work. But, I am looking forward to basketball season which is right around the corner. I wish the Owls the best of luck!
